Most Notable Magazine Launch Announced

(October 6, 2005, New York) - Cooking Light  (cover1) was anointed the "most notable launch of the past two decades" by min and Dr. Samir Husni during a sold-out awards event today at the Waldorf-Astoria honoring the top 22 consumer magazines launches of the past 20 years.

Cooking Light (cover2), launched in 1987, went from a national circulation of 450,000 at its inception to about 1.7 million in 2005. Audience figures were at a whopping 11.4 million in the first quarter of 2005, a full 10.8 percent jump from its highest circulation figures from 2004.

"With its endless supply of useful information on health and nutrition, it is no wonder that shoppers nationwide continue to spend a few extra dollars at the grocery store cash register every month for their copies of Cooking Light, while others continue to renew their subscriptions," noted Husni, publisher of the Guide to New Magazines and a partner with min on the "Hottest Launches" awards event.

The 22 magazines recognized as the most successful launches essentially outdid the more than 14,000 magazines that have launched over the past 20 years. min and Husni also recognized Ann Moore and Don Welsh as the top launch publishers. Ann Moore, who as People Group president (1991-2002) spun off InStyle, People en Español, Teen People, Real Simple, launched four magazines last year as Time Inc. Chairman & CEO. Don Welsh is founder of Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel (1997) and Budget Living (2002).

In celebration of the University of Mississippi journalism department chairman Samir Husni's 20th anniversary of his Guide to New Consumer Magazines, Media Industry Newsletter (min) asked Husni to choose the 22 most notable launches since 1985 that stood out from the crowd of thousands. These are judged as most notable, not necessarily "best" or "most successful."

"These hottest launches are the personification of team effort and out-of-the-big-box thinking," notes Diane Schwartz, vice president and group publisher of min. "With these awards, we're honored to showcase some of the best talent the magazine industry has to offer."
